The LGBT Elder Americans Act
The LGBT Elder Americans Act of 2012 will amend the Older Americans Act of 1965 (OAA) to ensure all older adults have equal access to aging services. As the country’s largest vehicle for funding and delivery of services to older adults, the OAA currently includes no mention of LGBT Americans.
Research has shown that LGBT older Americans have fewer resources of support and therefore face higher poverty rates and experience poor health and health access. This information, coupled with the fact that the LGBT older adult population is estimated to double to 3 million by 2030 requires our immediate attention to address the disparities in programs, services, outreach, and research for LGBT seniors.
Our bill is designed to meet the unique and critical needs of the growing number of LGBT older adults in Colorado and across the country.
