Bennet Statement on Two-Year Anniversary of Democracy-Damaging Supreme Court Citizens United Decision

Cosponsor of Amendment to Return Authority to States and Congress to Regulate Campaign Finance

Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today released the following statement on the two-year anniversary of the Citizens United v. FEC ruling that reversed decades of precedent and declared dozens of national and state laws unconstitutional.

“Campaign season is now in full swing, and thanks to the 5-to-4 Citizens United ruling a flood of anonymous and special interests have taken advantage of the giant loophole opened by the Supreme Court and worked to drown out the voices of ordinary Americans.

“Turning our electoral system into a silent auction will corrode our democracy. We can take small but meaningful steps to help restore faith in the system by requiring disclosure and returning the power to set reasonable rules for election to the people. I proposed a simple constitutional amendment to provide states and Congress with the authority to place reasonable regulations on our campaign finance system, as they have done ever since Watergate. I urge my colleagues in Congress to help pass this crucial and commonsense fix.”

Bennet and New Mexico Senator Tom Udall have introduced a constitutional amendment that would return authority to Congress and the states to regulate the campaign finance system.
