Bennet Statement on One-Year Anniversary of Citizens United Ruling

Denver, CO – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet released the following statement today on the one-year anniversary of the Citizens United v. FEC ruling.

“This 5 to 4 ruling abandoned longstanding precedent and made a broken Washington even more dysfunctional,” Bennet said.  “It drowned the voices of ordinary Americans with a flood of distorting special interests.  Later, a minority in the Senate blocked a small but important step in the right direction—the DISCLOSE Act.  That is unacceptable.  We must not stand aside as special interests sweep in with secret, shadowy big dollar advertising buys and distorted political attacks that corrupt our election system.”

Bennet is an original cosponsor of the DISCLOSE Act, and he has pushed for bolder campaign finance reform as part of his Plan for Washington Reform.  His plan also includes reforming the filibuster, ending secret holds and landmark lobbying reform.
