Washington, D.C. – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet issued the following statement in response to reports that the Trump Administration plans to lower the annual number of refugees entering the United States to 45,000 individuals:

“Today’s announcement betrays fundamental American values and does nothing to strengthen our security. For generations, refugees have come to our country to flee persecution and seek a better life. While we must work to enhance the screening process, refugees are more thoroughly vetted than anyone else entering our country. Imposing an arbitrary cap will not make us safer and will diminish our reputation as a leader in the world. Instead of turning our backs on the children and families seeking refuge, the administration must reconsider the cap and consult with Congress on limits to the refugee program that align with our values and keep us safe.”
