Bennet Welcomes Bipartisan Bill to Boost U.S. Exports, Create Jobs

Senate, House Leaders Introduce Bill to Deliver Job-Creating Trade Agreements

Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet released the following statement on the introduction of a bipartisan, bicameral bill that will establish strong rules for trade negotiations and Congressional approval of trade pacts, to deliver trade agreements that boost U.S. exports, and create American jobs. The bill was introduced today by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT), Ranking Member Orrin Hatch (R-UT), and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI).

“We have a real opportunity to add velocity to our economy if we look outside the box and beyond our borders. Colorado businesses are poised to take advantage of new customers and opportunities around the world, increasing Colorado exports and creating new jobs at home.

“Passing this bill will help strengthen the hands of U.S. trade officials currently negotiating critical trade agreements in both Asia and Europe, empowering them to finalize the most favorable possible deal for Colorado farmers, workers, and consumers.  As we move forward, we must ensure that fair labor standards, intellectual property, and environmental safeguards are prioritized in any trade agreement brought before Congress. This legislation creates a strong foundation to promote these priorities.”

The Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities Act of 2014 establishes 21st century Congressional negotiating objectives and rules for the Administration to follow when engaged in trade talks, including requirements for Congressional consultations and access to information.  Provided the Administration follows Congressional guidelines, special expedited procedures apply when moving a negotiated deal that satisfies the articulated objectives through the Senate and House of Representatives. Passing the Trade Priorities Act (TPA) will help lay the groundwork to finalize major new trade agreements in the months and years to come.
