Bennet Statement on Temporary Budget Agreement to Prevent Government Shutdown

Calls for Realistic, Comprehensive Approach Based on the Fiscal Commission's Proposals to Address the Deficit

Washington, DC – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet released the following statement on the budget agreement to extend funding for the government for two weeks.

“Coloradans expect us to get our work done.  We should take a realistic and comprehensive approach to address our debt and deficit, for which the Fiscal Commission has provided a blueprint.  Everything should be on the table and we should all share in the burden to reduce the deficit.

“Political theater should not interrupt the momentum that the fiscal commission has given us.  Hopefully, over the next two weeks we will find a way towards a meaningful comprehensive and realistic process to balance our budget.”

Bennet is part of bipartisan group of senators led by Mark Warner (D-VA) and Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) calling for the Senate to debate and take an up-or-down vote on the Fiscal Commission’s recommendations. In addition to pushing for debate on the Fiscal Commission’s recommendations, Bennet is a cosponsor of a bill to provide the President with a line-item-veto and voted in favor of a Congressional ban on earmarks.
