Washington, DC – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today released the following statement on the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, shifting power to the Egyptian military council in the wake of days of protests.

“For the last three weeks, we have seen remarkable images coming out of Egypt as crowds – young and old, men and women, rich and poor – took to the streets in peaceful protest with the hope that their unified voice for positive change would be heard. Today, with President Mubarak’s decision to step down after nearly 30 years in power, the strength of the Egyptian collective call for freedom and democracy has been affirmed.

“Egypt now sits at a critical juncture that will affect this entire region of the world. As Egyptians celebrate this moment, the military and the people should work together to ensure a peaceful transition to a stable democracy.  America should offer our continued support for Egypt to attain the free, democratic government to which its people are entitled.”
