Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today applauded the passage of an amendment to allow the Department of Defense (DoD) to continue to invest in alternative fuels. The amendment, introduced by Senator Mark Udall (D-CO), to the National Defense Authorization bill gives the Pentagon more flexibility to purchase some alternative fuels. Bennet is a cosponsor of the amendment.

“The Defense Department is doing breakthrough work to lessen our dependence on foreign oil, which would strengthen our security and better protect our troops,” Bennet said. “This commonsense amendment gives the Pentagon the flexibility and authority it needs to continue this work. I’m happy the Senate passed this amendment and applaud Senator Udall for his leadership on this important issue.”

The Pentagon is the largest single user of oil in the world, consuming more than 355,000 barrels of oil per day in FY 2011.
