Washington, D.C. – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet issued the following statement on the passing of Shimon Peres, the former Prime Minister and President of Israel:

“Our thoughts are with the people of Israel as they mourn the passing of Shimon Peres. He was an exemplary world leader who helped shape the special relationship the United States shares with Israel. His extraordinary commitment and vision strengthened the unbreakable bond between our two countries. His leadership and commitment to the state and people of Israel will serve as an example to future generations.”

In 2014, Bennet joined Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), along with Representatives Joe Kennedy (D-MA) and Trent Franks (R-AZ) in the House, to pass a bipartisan, bicameral bill that honored President Peres with the Congressional Gold Medal. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian award in the United States. It is awarded to individuals, organizations, or events that have made a tremendous contribution to the history and culture of our country.
