Washington, D.C. — Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet released the following statement:
“Today’s reporting of abuse and sexual assault against women and girls by Cesar Chavez are horrific. My thoughts are with those who were harmed by him, and I applaud their bravery in coming forward.
“The United Farm Workers’ movement is larger than one man. Millions of people across the country marched and fought for labor rights and the respect they deserved. We cannot afford to abandon the movement’s fight to protect farm workers and immigrants, especially in the face of the Trump Administration’s cruel and inhumane policies. Over the time I’ve worked in the Senate, it has been my honor to work alongside the farm workers and their leadership in our effort to pass comprehensive immigration reform, and I will continue to do so.
“As Coloradans grapple with today’s revelations and we move to rename landmarks, we must ensure the survivors receive the dignity and justice they are owed.”
