Denver— Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, issued a statement following President Trump’s Truth Social post threatening Iran:

“Today, President Trump issued an ultimatum that ‘Iran’s whole civilization will die tonight’ unless the regime complies with his demands to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He is threatening war crimes to fix a crisis he created. This is a reckless, dangerous escalation.

“Let’s be clear: Trump’s war with Iran is a failure that must end immediately. He launched his war without either a clear strategy, or honest justifications.

“Now, Americans are paying the price. Oil prices are soaring – up 35 percent in Colorado. Iran is more radical than ever and has killed our troops. Russia is cashing in from high oil prices. China is gaining ground while our focus shifts away from Asia.

“It’s true that Iran’s regime is dangerous, which is why I’ve supported harsh measures against them for years. But this war cannot go on.

“Trump is trying to fund his war one way or another. I won’t support a single cent going to it. I won’t entertain the idea of Trump’s absurd $1.5 trillion defense budget. My Republican colleagues must stand up to the President and do the same.

“Our country deserves better than this.”
