Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today welcomed the decision by the Department of Defense to remove the ban on women serving in direct combat. The decision was announced by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta yesterday.

“Women have proven their courage, capability, and valor on countless battlefields throughout our history,” Bennet said. “Female Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, and Airmen have been awarded the Purple Heart since World War II. It is high time we recognize their service and that they deserve to serve in a direct combat role if they so choose.”
