Bennet: As Gulf Coast Communities Suffer, Some in Senate Blocking Progress for Political Gain

Washington, DC – Michael Bennet, U.S. Senator for Colorado, released the following statement after one Senator blocked an effort to pass legislation providing subpoena power to the National Commission investigating the BP Oil Spill.  Bennet is an original cosponsor of the bill.  A similar measure recently passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 420 to 1:

“Here we go again—yet another Senator manipulating the rules of the Senate to block progress and prevent an effort that has broad support from moving forward,” said Bennet.  “It seems that some in Washington are more interested in holding up progress than working to get to the bottom of what happened in the Gulf and prevent a disaster like this from happening again.  This subpoena power will help ensure accountability, but Washington again is gridlocked.  It’s an injustice to Gulf Coast communities that continue to suffer.”
