Bennet: Broken Washington Blocks DISCLOSE Act

DISCLOSE Act Would Improve Transparency in Campaign Finance and Limit Fallout from Citizens United Ruling

Washington, DC - Michael Bennet, U.S. Senator for Colorado, today released the following statement after a minority of Senators blocked consideration of the DISCLOSE Act.  The bill, which passed the House of Representatives last month, would limit the fallout from the Supreme Court’s recent disastrous ruling in Citizens United v. FEC:

“Washington’s broken ways have allowed the voices of ordinary Americans to be drowned out by the distorting influence of special interests,” said Bennet.  “Instead of standing up for the American people, a broken system in Washington has forced the Senate to stand aside as special interests sweep in with big dollar ad buys and political attacks.”

Having cosponsored the DISCLOSE Act, Bennet’s push for legislation to limit special interest election spending is part of his Plan for Washington Reform.  His plan also includes a reform to the filibuster process, ends secret holds and bring an end to needless, partisan delay.  The Senate Rules Committee is set to hold a hearing on Bennet’s filibuster proposal tomorrow.
