Senate Passes Bennet-Backed North Korea Sanctions

Bipartisan Bill Incorporates Measures from Bennet-Sponsored Bill

Washington, D.C. - The Senate today passed a bipartisan bill supported by Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet to strengthen and expand sanctions against the North Korean regime and those who assist it. The bill, sponsored by Senators Cory Gardner and Bob Menendez, includes several measures from a bipartisan bill cosponsored by Bennet.

"The North Korean regime's flagrant disregard of international commitments and its persistent nuclear weapons development pose a threat to the region and to our nation's security," Bennet said. "It's past time for tough new sanctions against the North Korean regime and anyone who assists it. This bipartisan bill sends a clear message that the United States will not tolerate this destabilizing intransigence."

The bipartisan North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act of 2016 will expand and tighten enforcement of sanctions for North Korea's nuclear, and ballistic missile development, illicit cyber activities, and other destabilizing actions of the regime.
