Bennet Statement on the Senate Passage of the Respect for Marriage Act

Washington, D.C. — Today, Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet released the following statement after the U.S. Senate passed the Respect for Marriage Act:

“American history has always been a struggle between our highest ideals and our worst impulses – between the promise of equality and the reality of inequality. Last week in Colorado, five lives were cut tragically short because of who they were, who they loved, and where they found community.

“This bill is a historic step toward realizing the promise of equality for LGBTQ people around the country. But our work is not done. We have more to do to achieve the words in our Constitution and realize the promise of equality for all our citizens.”

Earlier today, Bennet spoke on the Senate Floor in support of the Respect for Marriage Act and to honor the victims and survivors of the recent Club Q shooting.
