Washington, D.C. – Today, Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet announced that Jess Smith will serve as his new Chief of Staff. Smith comes to Bennet’s office with two decades of management and communications experience on Capitol Hill, in federal government, on campaigns, and in nonprofits. In her last role on Capitol Hill, Smith served as Communications Director for former U.S. Senator Jim Webb (D-Va.).
“Jess' extensive experience in management, communications and public service will serve our team well as we continue to fight for Colorado families and workers during this public health and economic crisis,” said Bennet. “We’re delighted to welcome Jess back to Capitol Hill, and I look forward to having her on our team.”
“Michael Bennet has a reputation for being in government for the right reasons: he is a problem-solver and works tirelessly to secure results for Coloradans and the American people. I am honored to join such a great team to continue their work to provide opportunity and security for all Coloradans and build an economy that works for everyone,” said Smith.
Most recently, Smith served as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the foreign policy advocacy group J Street. Smith also served in the Obama Administration as a senior spokesperson for the Department of Justice and as the Director of External Affairs for FEMA during Hurricane Sandy. She has also previously worked at the global public affairs firm Burson-Marsteller, where she served as a Managing Director and head of operations for the Public Affairs and Crisis practice.
Smith has managed congressional campaigns, served as a political director for Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign, and worked on the 2000 Democratic National Convention. She is a graduate of Cornell University, and she and her husband Erik have two kids, Jack and Genevieve.
