Bennet Cosponsors Resolutions Celebrating Hispanic Heritage

Resolutions Recognize Hispanic Heritage Month and Nonprofits Serving the Community

Washington, DC - Today, Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet cosponsored a resolution introduced by Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and honor the heritage, culture, and contributions of Hispanic Americans throughout U.S. history. Bennet is also cosponsoring a resolution introduced by Menendez and Reid designating this week of September 14th through the 20th as "National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week" to recognize the 409 nonprofit Hispanic-Serving Institutions throughout our nation for their critical work.

"Hispanic Americans have played an integral role in shaping Colorado's economy, culture, and history," Bennet said. "Coloradans take great pride in the state's Latino heritage and the many accomplishments of Latinos who have helped make Colorado a better place. Over the next month, we'll celebrate our thriving Latino community and recognize the many contributions it has made to the heritage of our state and our nation. In addition to celebrating this rich culture, we must do more to create more opportunities for the next generation of Latinos and all Americans. I look forward to continuing to work with Hispanic families, students, and leaders on key issues like reforming our immigration system, improving our system of public education, and making college more accessible and affordable."

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 to recognize the important role and contributions of Hispanic Americans. Hispanic Americans are the largest racial or ethnic minority group in the U.S. Hispanic-Serving Institutions are defined as colleges or universities where total Hispanic enrollment constitutes a minimum of 25 percent of the total enrollment. These organizations represent 12 percent of nonprofit colleges and universities, yet enroll 59 percent of all Latino students.
