Equitable CREP Rental Rates will Help Colorado Achieve Water Conservation Goals

Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet sent a letter to U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack urging him to implement equitable Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) irrigation rental rates for farmers and ranchers in the Republican River system. Currently, the federal government pays producers on the Republican River in Colorado $115 per acre to take land out of agriculture production to promote water conservation.

In a speech on the Senate floor yesterday, Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet opposed efforts to delay consideration of a nominee to replace Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, saying the tactic was akin to replacing Article II, Section 2 of the United States Constitution with so-called "standard practice" that has no real historical precedent.
