Bennet, Baldwin Introduce Bill to Expand Services for LGBT Seniors

Bill Permanently Establishes National Resource Center on LGBT Aging

U.S. Senators Michael Bennet (D-CO) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) today introduced the LGBT Elder Americans Act to improve services available for older lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) adults. Specifically, the bill would build upon the Older Americans Act to include LGBT seniors as a vulnerable population and permanently establish the National Resource Center on LGBT Aging. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) is also an original cosponsor.
The Senate today adopted an amendment introduced by Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet to help make the most of existing programs, services, and funding. The amendment requires the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to study and provide recommendations on ways to increase the coordination and effectiveness of existing federal programs that benefit or serve children.
The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee unveiled an updated version of the Every Child Achieves Act, a bill to fix No Child Left Behind, with several new measures authored by Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet. The previous version of the bill was approved 22-0 by the HELP Committee.
